There are countless data recovery programs for both Mac and Windows available to download and use. They will help you recover your files that you may have deleted accidentally, or if otherwise you lose your data to a virus. You should know that when you delete a file, it goes to the Recycle Bin (speaking of Windows). Once you delete it from your recycle bin, you cannot just recover the file and you may think it is gone forever. Well, if so, that is not necessarily the case. While it is impossible for you to recover it without third-party applications, it is still far from lost.

It is currently compatible with all the latest versions of windows and there is also a 64-bit version of Recuva available. You can either download an installable version, and use the portable one, both of which are provided by Piriform.

Puran File Recovery is almost right up there with Recuva. It will scan for deleted files in any drive that Windows can detect. There are several advanced options for you to play with. During testing phases, this particular software detected more files than Recuva, by a small margin, so after running Recuva, you should try this one to see if you can find the file you are looking for.

This particular software is very easy to use and has a really simple interface. The biggest advantages is that it offers folders view when you are trying to recover files. So even if the file name is messed up, this software will tell you which folder the file belonged to so you can better judge. One of the major disadvantages of this software is that you have to install it definitely in order to use it and it will ask you to install a toolbar.

Pandora is another excellent recovery software which is free and easy to use. It has advanced surface scanning option available and should recover more files than your average file recovery software. Just make sure that the files you are trying to recover belong to a popular format. They have support for Windows Vista, XP, Server 2003 and 2000. It worked perfectly on Windows 7, however, the functionality on Windows 8 is uncertain.

You can use this particular software to very easily discover files that you may have deleted. It will undelete files from hard drives, memory cards etc. Any device that is connected to your computer and can store data will be checked for deleted files. It works perfectly on Windows 8, Windows 7, Vista, Xp, Server 2008 and 2003. Even Windows 95 is supported. 64-Bit version of this software is also available.

With just a few clicks, you can manage to recover your deleted files. The user interface is quite similar to that of Windows Explorer, so it is easy to navigate around. It will scan for deleted files on any data storing device including optical drives and memory cards. Drawback is that it will only recover 2GB of data.

Using restoration is very simple. It is not complicated and is very easy to understand and start working with. It can recover files from your hard drives, memory cards, USB drives and other removable media. It supports Windows Vista, XP, 2000 etc. It also works fine with Windows 7.

The only drawback this tool has is that it will not recover any files or scan CDs and DVDs. Apart from that, it will, and rather quickly, scan your hard drive, memory cards and other removable storage. It is only a 132 kb program but works wonders.

According to the publisher of this particular tool, CD Recovery Toolbox should be able to recover data from scratched or chipped CDs. That also includes Blu-Ray, DVDs and HD DVDs. Of course, this application will not be scanning your hard drives and other removable storage. It is specifically for CDs and optical media.

There are two different and helpful views with this application. One is the tree view and the other is detailed view. Both will help you ease the navigation. It is fairly quick and quite effective in what it’s made for. It supports Windows 8 Pro so the previous versions should not be a problem.

The best thing about this recovery software is the ease of use and the efficiency. It is compatible across Windows 7 right through to Windows 95. It successfully tested on Windows 8 as well. It is only a 412 kb program.

This software can recover files from most of your average hardware including hard drives, external drives and memory cards. It runs perfectly fine on even Windows 8 and the functionality is quite fast too. You should be able to recover your files easily with this one.

Finally, we have Orion. It is a nice wizard and it will prompt you to scan for a specific file type. Of course, you can choose to do a general scan, but if you know what you are looking for, this feature certainly proves to save  lot of time.
